Year 6 Victorian Day

Monday 18th December was Victorian Day at Crawley Ridge Junior School. Year 6 children and staff came to school dressed as Victorians and spent a busy day taking part in Victorian lessons and performing the plays they had written for their Victorian toy theatres.

Victorian Day was an ideal opportunity for the children to experience what lessons would have been like in a Victorian school. Discipline was extremely strict; several children were made to wear the Dunces hat and sit in the corner and one chid was even "given the cane!" In literacy, the importance of accurate spelling and neat handwriting was emphasised very strongly. In mathematics, the children learnt about old coins and appreciated the importance of knowing their 12 times table to help them work out how many old pennies there were in a shilling.

In the afternoon, the children visited years 3, 4 and 5 and enjoyed using their Victorian toy theatres to perform the plays that they had written, which included Goldilocks and the Three bears, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.
