Physical Education
Intent:
At Crawley Ridge Junior School, our Physical Education curriculum aims to develop pupils’ confidence, competence and enjoyment in physical activity. We provide opportunities for pupils to acquire and apply a broad range of physical skills, enabling them to perform with increasing control, coordination and confidence across a variety of activities.
PE promotes an understanding of how the body moves, responds and adapts during exercise, while fostering positive attitudes towards health, fitness and wellbeing. Through a holistic approach to sport and physical activity, we aim to equip pupils with lifelong skills, encouraging them to make informed and active choices throughout their lives. Pupils are supported to work collaboratively, develop resilience and reflect on their performance with confidence.
Implementation
PE is taught across all year groups and follows the National Curriculum, supported by the school’s progressive skills framework. Pupils experience a broad and balanced range of activities including:
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Athletics
- Net and wall games
- Striking and Fielding
- Outdoor and adventurous activities
Swimming and water safety are taught in Year 4, with additional provision for Year 6 pupils who have not met the 25‑metre swimming requirement.
Teachers use a range of schemes and resources to support planning, ensuring lessons build on prior learning and are informed by ongoing assessment against National Curriculum objectives. Lessons are inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all pupils through:
- Open‑ended tasks with multiple outcomes
- Personal challenges and opportunities for pupils to set personal bests
- Differentiated equipment and resources
Pupils are actively involved in setting up and tidying away equipment, promoting responsibility and safe practice.
Learning is enriched through extra‑curricular clubs, inter‑school competitions and daily active brain breaks, including the daily mile, seated Pilates and dance activities. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 are trained by Active Surrey to become Sports Crew leaders, acting as ambassadors for sport and supporting activities throughout the school.
Impact
Pupils demonstrate increased confidence, skill and enjoyment in physical activity. They understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle and are able to discuss how exercise affects their bodies and wellbeing. Pupils show positive attitudes to teamwork, fair play and personal challenge, supported by opportunities to compete and cooperate.
The impact of PE is assessed through:
- Ongoing formative assessment within lessons
- Observation of skill development and application
- Outcomes against agreed National Curriculum‑based assessment criteria
- Pupil voice and self‑reflection
Monitoring is carried out by the subject leader through lesson observations, assessment review, pupil interviews and staff discussions, in line with the school’s monitoring cycle. Pupils leave Crawley Ridge Junior School with the skills, confidence and motivation to engage in physical activity both independently and as part of a team.
