Computing

Our Computing Subject Leader is Miss Charlotte Wescott

Intent:

For all children to be given opportunities to learn purposeful computing skills enabling them to use these in the wider-world. From year 3, children learn basic skills which are built upon as they progress throughout the school and are confident with using a range of skills by the time they finish year 6.

We aim to inspire children within computing by offering them a range of opportunities to explore different aspects within the computing world.

We aim for the children to understand the potential risks being online can present and take a rigorous approach, to ensure that the children leave our School with the knowledge of being safe online.

Implementation:

In all year groups, we follow the ‘Teach Computing’ curriculum created by the National Centre for Computing Education. Through this scheme the children will explore various aspects of computing; ranging from video and sound editing, computer networks, picture editing and 3D modelling. These units can either be taught over a 6 week period or, if it suits, teachers may feel that it can be taught as a focused block over the course of a few days.

As a school we value online safety and implement the ‘Google Online Safety Scheme’. Throughout the programme, children are made aware of various threats and are presented with real-life scenarios. Due to the high priority given to safeguarding and keeping children safe online, teachers continue to discuss relevant issues throughout the year, making links where possible across the curriculum, in particular during PSHE and assembly times.

Impact:

Computer science: pupils are able to understand the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through coding, programming and problem solving.

Digital Literacy: pupils can express themselves and develop ideas through evaluating, investigating and predicting. Pupils are confident in understanding how to use a variety of technology safely, including online.

Information Communication Technology: pupils are able to use technologies effectively, select use and combine a variety of software on a range of devices and present, evaluate and analyse their results and findings.
