Special Educational Needs

Our SENDCo and Inclusion Leader is Mrs Lisa Culligan.

Every member of the Crawley Ridge Junior School community is regarded as being of equal worth and importance. Inclusion recognises differences; meeting the needs of individuals and taking positive action, so that everyone has equal access to the educational opportunities offered by the school. We work hard to ensure that every member of our school community – pupils, parents, staff and visitors – feel safe and included. We are an inclusive school and every child, whatever their individual abilities or needs, is equally valued and welcome here. We expect all parents and visitors to understand and support our inclusive ethos.

At Crawley Ridge Junior School, we are committed to providing a personalised education that brings out the best in every child. We ensure that all pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, differentiated to meet individual needs, and therefore enabling every child to reach their full potential and to develop as caring, confident and committed individuals. Central to this is the inclusion and progress of all children with additional needs; every teacher is a teacher of every child, including those with SEND or other needs.

Many children, at some time in their school career will have additional needs of some kind, whether in terms of learning, communication and interaction, physical and sensory, or social and emotional needs.

A few children will need help and support for all of their time at school, whilst others will benefit from support for a shorter time. Most additional needs are met by differentiated provision within the classroom. Additional, and more personalised provision, is made through a variety of interventions, using tried and tested resources and activities. The school, in line with Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2002, adopts a graduated response in order to help children with SEN access a balanced and broadly-based curriculum.

Successful inclusion is ensured by close liaison with parents and professionals in order to ascertain and meet individual need. The SEN team, which includes teachers and teaching assistants who work with the children who have special educational needs, is led by Mrs Culligan, our Inclusion Manager.

We are committed to the early identification of children with special educational needs and effective targeted intervention to support them. The School maintains a list of children with SEN which is regularly reviewed throughout the academic year. For children who need specific help, an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is drawn up with the child, teacher and parent. If the School feels it is necessary to consult with other agencies or professionals, parents are consulted and consent requested before any action is taken. We follow the assess, plan, do approach to support those pupils with additional needs.

Parents knowledge, views and experiences are highly valued and parents are involved in all stages of the graduated response process. If your child has any kind of special educational need, emotional need or disability, please contact the school at the earliest opportunity so that we can discuss with you how these needs can be met.
